Everything You Need to Know About Ideal Wrap

Did you know... less than 10% of plastic gets recycled in the United States? If you're tired of buying plastic wrap and baggies just to throw them away, are looking for a sustainable solution to single-use plastics, or just want to throw less stuff away, you've landed in the right place.

Our Company

Ideal Wrap is committed to helping environmentally-conscious families reduce their household single-use plastics. Our beeswax food wrap embodies reducing, reusing, and recycling by design - not by marketing. Using Ideal Wrap instead of plastic and foil reduces your household waste from food storage each time you use it. And with just a quick rinse and a little time to dry, you'll be wrapping up another one of your favorite foods in no time. And because Ideal Wrap is made from completely natural materials, recycling it couldn't be easier. There's no special trips, store drop-offs or bins. You can use strips of your old, worn-out wraps for fire starters or throw them in with your compost.

What is it made of?

Our wrap is made from 100% organic cotton fabric certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard, sustainably sourced beeswax from non-pollution areas, organic jojoba oil, and natural tree resin. Food wrap made from these materials has been scientifically proven to naturally reduce bacterial growth and lengthen the life of fresh fruits and vegetables!

How does it work exactly?

The breathable cotton allows fresh fruit and veggies to expel otherwise trapped gases, slowing their decomposition. These gases would be trapped inside an air-tight plastic bag which is why you get slimy greens, grey avocados, and whatever that weird film that grows on citrus is.

The beeswax and jojoba oil in the coating provide natural antibacterial and antimicrobial properties to further protect those luscious lemons, leeks and lettuces.

Tree resin is included in the mix to make the wrap sticky! This is what allows the wrap to adhere to itself, and give you the same clinging effect we get from static-laden plastic wrap. You'll find Ideal Wrap sticks to glass, ceramic and Pyrex, too.

How do I use it?

Just mold your wrap directly around foods or containers. You can think of wrapping flat items (sandwiches, bell pepper halves) like folding an envelope. It just takes a little pressure and warmth from your hands to get it going and to create whatever effect you're after. With a little creativity, you'll find you can use Ideal Wrap with any size and shape of produce, bread or cheese!

Your wrap can be folded into snack pouches, baggies, or even bowls. Use your imagination! (Or your awesome origami skills.) It's also GREAT for covering rising dough, water kefir, and fermentation projects!

For superior liquid-repellance and spill-protection, spend a little extra time molding your wrap and creating a good seal.

There is one very important limitation of beeswax-based food wrap...

Keep away from heat. Beeswax has a melting point around 140-145 degrees, so hot food, hot water, and microwaves and a big no-no. Technically, Ideal Wrap is flammable :) which is why it makes a great fire-starter in its second life. Washing with hot, or even warm, water will quickly deteriorate the coating.

And because you can't wash it with hot water, we recommend not letting your wrap contact raw meat.

How do I clean it?

Since Ideal Wrap is naturally antibacterial, you can clean it by simply rinsing under cool or tepid water, adding a little dish soap and massaging gently if needed. Pat with a towel and hang to dry.

Be sure your wrap is dry before folding it and putting it away, as once the beeswax begins to crack your wrap can mold.

I've heard of beeswax wrap before, what makes you special?

We thought you'd never ask! In addition to our product guarantee, our fun and upbeat patterns, and our high-quality, durable wrap, Ideal Wrap is committed to outreach, education, giving back to our rad community (what up St Pete!), and we specialize in wholesale distribution, providing great opportunities for local and national retailers to carry a high-quality, eco-friendly and plastic-free product. So don't be surprised when we pop up at your favorite natural foods store or independent grocer!

So back to my wrap... how do I clean off this stuck-on gunk?

Oh yes, avocados and cheese especially can leave "gunk" stuck to your wrap. Quick fix: while rinsing your wrap under COLD water (to harden the beeswax coating and keep it in place), use the back of a spoon to gently scrape off any gunk or grime leftover from your wrapping endeavors. We recommend doing this every once in a while, to prevent anything from sticking permanently!

Will my wrap stain?

The cotton cloth will indeed absorb excess oils (think leftover pizza) and colors from food (orange bell peppers for sure) - this doesn't necessarily affect the function of the wrap, but it does decrease its visual appeal. ;) You can prevent oil stains by blotting away excess oil before wrapping.

What is the best way to store it?

We recommend storing your wrap folded in the original packaging for the best preservation, or alternatively, sandwiched between cutting boards. This prevents airborne particles from sticking to the wrap. Be sure to only put away your wraps once they're dry to prevent mold and keep the coating in tact.

When left exposed to the air, the coating may start to feel less sticky, but will be renewed when you start working with it.

Refrigeration and cool weather may also make your wrap feel less sticky. Simply spend a few extra seconds pressing with your hands to achieve the warmth necessary to make it pliable.

How long will my wrap last?

Depending on use, your wrap should last 12 months, or even longer. The less you wash it, the longer it will last.

When your Ideal Wrap starts to feel worn, you can give it a bit of a refresh by warming it on a cookie sheet in the sun or blasting it with a hair dryer. As the beeswax begins to soften, it will penetrate any cracks or bare areas.

When the time finally comes to replace your wrap, you'll probably feel sad, but you can recycle the old ones into fire starters, jar lid openers, as layering between pots, pans, and glassware, or even as shelf liners.

Pro tip: trim your disposed wraps into ~4" x 1" strips, tie a knot in the middle, and throw them in a jar. You have a trendy jar of fire-starters for camping and grilling season! :)

Can I cut or trim my wrap?

Yep! Our Small, Medium and Large sizes are 1" longer on one side than the other. If you prefer a perfect square, you can trim an inch off of one side with a sharp box cutter or "exacto" knife using a very firm straight-edge as a guide. You can also cut with scissors but it's not really the best way because of the coating. Be sure to hang on to those strips you cut away! They make great fire-starters, or can be further divided and used as ties!

Where is your wrap made?

Our wraps are made in China from globally-sourced, sustainably-produced materials. Our manufacturers maintain current FDA inspections and hold USDA certificates for the organic handling of beeswax. Our beeswax originates from Australia.

"Australia is one of the few countries in the world where hives are free of the debilitating varroa mite, meaning Australian wax is parasite-free, pesticide-free and of pharmaceutical quality." - The Guardian
